WURTSBORO – A crowd of about 600 people came out for a fundraiser at St. Joseph's Church this past Saturday evening. The event was held in order to raise funds for Matthew Germann, the son of Kristy and Michael Germann, who suffers from a rare form of epilepsy known as infantile spasm, or West Syndrome, a condition that causes seizures lasting from anywhere from one to five seconds, and which can occur in groups, sometimes dozens at a time.
The proceeds from the event, which were in excess of $4,000, will be used to help defray the costs of Matthew's treatment. He will next be subject to a number of tests, including an MRI and PET scan, so as to determine if he is a candidate for surgery. The type of surgery in question targets the specific area of the brain that causes these seizures.
The show of support was particularly impressive when one considers that Wurtsboro has a population of just 1,200.
"We had a great turnout," said Matthew's mother, Kristy Germann.
On hand were members of the Wurtsboro Volunteer Fire Department, including Councilman Ted Brebbia, and Deputy Assistant Chief Charlie Corrigan. It was Corrigan, along with Dan Reilly, who organized the event. Mamakating Town Supervisor Robert Fiore, bedecked in an apron and kitchen gloves, was also on hand to help serve the guests.
"We've been cooking since eight o'clock this morning," Fiore said.
The Germanns seemed truly humbled by the support shown by the Wurtsboro community. They were also quick to thank everyone for the effort, especially family and friends, as well as numerous others, who helped to organize the dinner.
"It was touching to see so many people come out," said Kristy Germann. "We had people we didn't even know coming up to us. It was overwhelming."
Those who wish to contribute can send donations to Mr. and Mrs. German, care of St. Joseph's Church, PO Box 277, Wurtsboro, NY 12790.
