Tragedy Unfolds in Mamakating

MAMAKATING – A three-year-old girl wandered from her home on Aldrich Road in the wee hours of Wednesday morning and was later found dead, according to state police.

Cassandra Weronick, daughter of Lisa and Douglas Weronick, was found at approximately 7 a.m. by a newspaper carrier for the Times Herald Record. According to reports, the little girl apparently had a history of wandering away from the family home.

While it is unclear as to exactly when the child had wandered off, the family stated that they had noticed a door ajar at approximately 3 a.m., but didn't realize that the child was not in her bed. Young Cassandra was found barefoot in her pajamas about three-quarters of a mile down the road from the family home, according to reports.

State police have said that they do not intend to charge the Weronicks at this time, but that they will continue their investigation into the toddler's death.
