Toddler Laid to Rest

MAMAKATING – Three-year-old Cassandra Anne Weronick was laid to rest this past Monday, February 6, at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Wurtsboro. "Cassie" died of exposure last Wednesday, February 4, after she had wandered away from her Aldrich Road home sometime during the wee hours of the morning.

A statement released by the family stated that 'Cassie,' who was born in Kingston, New York, on September 18, 2005, "had a magic about her that touched so many lives, and she was quick to put a smile on the face of anyone whom she encountered in her short life." The statement released by the family also said that she "will be remembered as a smart, polite, and happy child," and that she will be "deeply missed."

According to reports, as of right now police say that there was apparently no foul play in little Cassandra's death, and no charges have been filed against Douglas and Lisa Weronick, Cassandra's parents. However, police did meet with prosecutors last week, and have not ruled out the possibility that charges could be filed in the future. Officials say they will await the results of a toxicology report before making their decision.

As of last Wednesday, the case has been reported to Child Protective Services, and the agency will be issuing a report within the next 60 days.
