ELLENVILLE – On Monday, May 11, the Ellenville boys' track and field team put on a stunning performance under the lights for the home crowd and won the third annual Mark Steinhoff Cup for the second year in a row. The Blue Devils defeated both Liberty and Tri-Valley which extended their dual meet record to 6-0 on the season. Ellenville finished with 96 total points, Liberty with 58, and Tri-Valley with 24. The meet was the team's showcase home meet of the year and it was the final time the team's seniors got to run in front of their home crowd.
Leading the way for the boys were double winners Sam Pozorski, AJ Borriello, and Ryan Valencia. Pozorski, a senior, and a medalist at last year's New York State Track and Field Outdoor Championships won both the 110 meter high hurdles (15.6) and the 400 meter hurdles (60.8). Fellow senior co-captain, Ryan Valencia won both the 400 meter dash (52.0) and the 800 meter run with a time of 2:04.3. Finally, junior co-captain, and indoor New York State qualifier in the shot put, won both the shot put (48'1'') and the discus (127').
Other winners of individual events for the Blue Devils were freshman Tyler Obryant who won the 100 meter dash with a personal best time of 11.1, and sophomore Stephen Stephens who won the mile with a personal best time of 4:57.9. In addition, the Blue Devils showed their prowess in winning all three relay events. The 400 meter relay team of Pozorski, Obryant, Jose Aldorondo, and Tomasz Czarnecki defeated both opponents with a time of 45.3. The 1600 meter relay team of Pozorski, Dan Quiceno, Doug Lewis, and Emile Reid won with a time of 3:40. Finally, the 3200 meter relay team of Doug Lewis, Nick Vanderhoff, Andres Rojas, and Andrew Platt set a new school record with their first place finish and 8:49.8 time.
Two days later the boys headed out to Pine Plains for their final dual meet of the season. The boys defeated the Bombers by a score of 99-44 and finished the season at a perfect 7-0. Triple winner Ben Altshuler won the 110 hurdles, long jump and triple jump for the Blue Devils. Double winners were Tyler O'Bryant (100, 200), Ryan Valencia (400, 800) and Matt Rogers (discus, high jump). The Blue Devils last loss in a dual meet now dates back to April of 2008 when they were narrowly defeated by Marlboro. Their record over the last 3 seasons is now 20-3.
The boys are off to Dietz Stadium in Kingston on Thursday, May 21, where they hope to capture the school's first ever Mid Hudson Athletic League Championship. The following week they will be back at Dietz for the Section IX Class B Championship Meet where they finished as a runner up to Onteora last year.
