I know Donald Corso. Corso, who will be entering his senior year at Ellenville High School this September, will be a mainstay on the Blue Devils football team, helping to anchor an offensive line that last season produced a tremendous rushing game for the defending Section 9 - Class C Blue Devils. I coached Donald Corso when he was a member of the Ellenville modified football team several years ago. So it completely baffled me when I read last week's Journal and saw that I typed Corso's name as "Corsette." I finally figured it out. Apparently, senility and multi-tasking do not make good bed partners. Last Sunday I was typing my weekly article and correcting my ninth grade Global Studies final exams at the same time. Apparently, I was correcting the paper of a student named Corsette and writing about Corso — hence the mix up. So, as I apologize to Donald Corso, allow me to tell you a little more about him, since linemen rarely get a lot of press, unless they are exceptional players or get an inordinate amount of holding penalties (Donald Corso is much closer to the first scenario). As a seventh grader, Corso was not convinced he wanted to play football. Corso had size but was a reserve lineman because the eighth grade class had some very solid athletes. Football is a lot of hard work and Corso was not quite convinced the rewards of his hard work would be worth the sacrifice. With the encouragement of his mother, Donald stayed with football and finished the season. I did not see much of Corso over the past few years but this last season, a magical one for the Blue Devils, I came face to face with him on the sidelines as the clock was winding down on an improbable Ellenville football sectional championship. I congratulated Corso and asked him if he was happy that he decided to stick with football. Corso, who possesses fine personal qualities such as class and humility said, "Yes, coach. And thanks for all of your help." So there you have it — a little more information on another hard working, humble young man who will graduate high school next June and make the Ellenville community proud — Donald Corso. Now I just have to get back to school and make sure I didn't write a note on the Corsette girl's final exam, congratulating her on her many accomplishments on the football field………. It's obvious that whoever the current owners of the Nevele Hotel are have completely abandoned any idea of maintaining the facility. The greatest evidence of this fact is that the owners have let the Nevele golf course became what can best be described as a "cow pasture." Even in the worst of economic times at the hotel, the golf course remained one of the best courses in the area, with long fairways that provided the beautiful scenery of the mountains as a backdrop. In recent times, hotel management has maintained only the three or four holes that border Route 209. Even those holes are now hidden by grass that is growing along the fence and is quickly approaching waist high level. A few weeks ago the Journal reported that the Little Red School House that is located on the Nevele golf course along Route 209 had fallen into total disrepair, with peeling paint and weeds growing high along the building. The school house is a Town of Wawarsing landmark and can be traced back to the 1860s. Many communities have one room school houses. For many of those communities, a restored and pristine school house is a prominent centerpiece in the community. Once property of the Ellenville School District, the Little Red School House was signed over to the Nevele ownership years ago. Perhaps, on the heels of the magnificent and spirited efforts to build the Ellenville Community Playground, a couple of Ellenville High School graduates, Tony Percocco and Jack Godfrey have shown interest in restoring the Little Red School House. This particular show of community pride was met with silence from the Nevele ownership. So here is how we take care of this situation folks. The Town of Wawarsing seeks to regain the Little Red School House and the immediate surrounding area from the Nevele through eminent domain. We get back and restore a historic community landmark and in the course of events, a little community pride also……….The recent Yankees domination of the cross-town rival Mets in the two Subway Series gives us Yankees fans fodder for the next year. If the Yankees don't make the World Series this year, Mets fans will have something to get excited about. Most Mets fans are short sighted and take more joy in Yankee losses than they do in Met wins. A friend of mine who roots for the Mets actually tried to convince me that she would take Jose Reyes over Derek Jeter at shortstop to start a franchise. That's just silly………..Someone forgot to tell the U.S.A. men's soccer team that they were playing one of the world's best soccer teams when they faced off against Brazil in the finals of the Confederations Cup last Sunday in South Africa. The Americans beat #1 ranked Spain in the semi-finals by a 3-0 score and gained the finals when Brazil also beat Italy by a 3-0 score in the other semi, giving the U.S.A. the goals differential it needed to make the championship game. The U.S. led at half 2-0 and was only 45 minutes away from shocking the world in an upset (actually two upsets) that would have rivaled that of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team. Someone must have told the Americans at half-time that Brazil was on the other side of the field because the Americans gave up a goal in the first minute in the second half, played a completely defensive game, and lost 3-2. Despite the loss, the U.S. played well above their usual level and has shown they can play with the big boys. We will know next year when the U.S. returns to South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup……….Despite the loss, American goal keeper Tim Howard showed he is arguably the best keeper in the world. Howard won the Gold Glove Award, given to the best goalie in the Confederations Cup tournament……….The rain continues to ruin summer and Ellenville is looking more like Seattle every day……….Used to be that if you went to a professional baseball game and it got rained out (usually called within two hours after game time) you got to get another game in exchange, and sometimes a double header. No more. If you want to earn a rain out "reward" you might have to stay up to five hours after the scheduled game start. That's what the Yankees did recently and the move was so ridiculous that the Yankees actually issued another game for those loyal (and foolish) fans that waited so long. Unbelievable……….
