KINGSTON — Last November 28, after a night of partying and consuming alcohol, Alycia Geiss, 18, crashed her car into a tree on Route 52. Alycia and another girl riding in the front seat survived, but Tasia Quackenbush, 16, was in the back seat and she died shortly afterwards at Westchester Medical Center.
Geiss had been taking the other girls to get breakfast at the time of the crash. During the previous night, the girls had attended two parties, one in Circleville, and one on Sinsabaugh Road. Quackenbush had left the second party early.
On September 8, 2009, at Ulster County Court in Kingston, Geiss pled guilty to second degree vehicular manslaughter in the death of Tasia Quackenbush. Her lawyer, Ben Greenwald, said, "She accepted full responsibility for her actions."
The Ulster County District Attorney's office has said that it opposes treating Geiss as a youthful offender. However, Judge Richard Sise, has said that he will treat Geiss that way, meaning that her record will be sealed. The judge has also said that he will consider a split sentence with some time in jail and some time on probation. He will also restrict the sentence to between one and three years in prison. The sentence will be handed down on November 17.
