Proposed Ulster County Community Wireless Would Connect with Low Impact

WAWARSING – Gilbert deLeon of Intelligent Information Technology Solutions, Inc., or IITS, has offered a bit more information about the potential Ulster County Community Wireless project that is currently undergoing review to receive stimulus funding through Ulster County, on which the Journal reported last week.

The company would employ "state-of-the-art, military-proven technology for deploying micro towers," which would provide high-speed internet access to those who are unable to get Internet service through Time Warner Cable or Verizon because of a lack of utility poles or too few customers in a region.

A press release published by IITS states that the micro towers are specially designed to be installed in many remote areas in such a fashion as to not upset or disturb the local region, and stand at an average of 35 feet, significantly smaller than cell phone towers that are designed to blanket an entire area with a signal.

"Ulster County Community Wireless' micro tower range is typically limited to 1-3 miles so as to provide better service in focused areas rather than taking a one tower fits all approach," describes the release. "To blanket an area, Community Wireless will spread multiple micro-towers out 6 miles apart and aim the subscribers' units to the best possible micro tower." The release also states that the towers "provide self sustaining power through solar charging cells and advanced battery technology to power up the access points and network equipment."

News on whether or not the stimulus application will be approved is expected to come by December or sooner.
