Gardiner Firm Lands Contract for 9/11 Memorial Bronze
Contract worth $10M

GARDINER – KC Fabrications operates from a steel building on Steve's Lane, in the heart of Gardiner's successful business park. Formed by owners Kurt Wulfmayer and Christopher Powers, KC Fabrications uses the sculpture skills of the principals to fashion high-end retail façades and other metal work for clients such as Chanel and Juicy Couture.

Recently they were selected by the Memorial Foundation and World Trade Committee as the Fabricator and Installer of the National September 11 Memorial in New York City at One World Trade.

The memorial will have massive bronze parapets bordering the original footprint of both World Trade Towers. On the outside of the parapets, the names of the close to 3,000 victims will be inscribed. Inside the parapets will be a shallow outer reflecting pool, and then within that a much deeper pool, and within that, at the bottom, another, small pool. Water will cycle between the pools, and flow over the lip of the outer pool down into the dark depths of the deep inner pools. There will also be lighting within the bronze parapets, so that the victims' names will be illuminated at night.

Joe Katz, Supervisor of the Town of Gardiner, welcomed the contract and noted that it would likely produce five new jobs at KC Fabrications. "The economic effects will be good for Gardiner."

Kurt Wulfmayer said the business had been going for three years. "We started out in my house, which is in Wallkill. Then we moved it here three years ago."

The bronze parapet sections, each ten feet long, are being made in Germany, and then shaped in New Jersey. The finishing work will all be done in Gardiner before the sections are removed to New York City and installed.

"Scheduling presents the greatest challenge," said Christopher Powers. "We'll be on the World Trade site from April this year to March 2011, when the job must be completed."
