ELLENVILLE – A 36-year-old village woman has been charged with first-degree rape, a Class B felony, after being accused of raping a 12-year-old boy.

Police arrested Tara Porter of 3 Bartlett St. on the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 8. An intensive investigation followed a report early that afternoon from the Child Abuse Hotline, which was notified anonymously that a sexual relationship was going on between the two, Ellenville Police Chief Phillip Mattracion said.

"We've had statutory rape cases before in the village, but nothing as egregious as this," Mattracion said. Porter was arraigned in Ellenville Village Court on Tuesday and sent to Ulster County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bond or $40,000 property bond. She was returned to jail after a preliminary hearing on Thursday, and the case has been sent to a grand jury.

The relationship had reportedly gone on for about six weeks. The boy is an acquaintance of Porter's, police said. Porter claims she is pregnant, but won't reveal who the father is. Mattracion said police have not received any proof that the boy could be the father.

"We've seen no medical tests, no doctors' reports," Mattracion said. "As they say, only time will tell." Child Protective Services is involved in the matter, he said.

"The investigation is ongoing," Mattracion added. "Further charges are pending. We're waiting for the grand jury to present their charges."

State Police and the Ellenville Bureau of Criminal Investigation worked with the Ellenville Police Department on the case.
