A Welcome Message From Our Publisher

Hello Dear Readers,

My name is Amberly, and I'm the new publisher of this fine publication, the Shawangunk Journal.

Thank you for welcoming me! I am extremely happy to be here, and I look forward to meeting more and more of you, hearing your perspectives, and sharing this journey together.

I am here for you, for our communities, for our businesses — I'm going to do my very best to lift and enhance the areas we cover while giving you, the readers, more of what you want to see and read.

In order for that to work, I need to hear from you. I'd love to meet you. We can chat about what's important to you — in our hometown of Ellenville, consolidation is on everyone's minds, and with it comes questions about taxes and jobs, and the logistics of police and fire responders — our own local heroes were quick and fleet on their feet and saved both human and animal lives at Emerald Pond Estates. Also, our hard-working clean-up crews, street and highway departments; snow removal was timely and many folks have shared their appreciation and commendation for a job well done. As we consider consolidation, local citizens want a dialogue about the implications — when that next fire happens or that next big storm — what happens then?

And that's where a community newspaper comes in. It's our job to be that essential sounding board, marketplace of ideas and resources, culler of facts and figures, disseminator of information. Fundamental to a community.

Also, the happy stuff. School plays and sports programs, warmer weather and the fests and parades that come with it. There's something intrinsically uplifting about strolling down the street and knowing your neighbors. Know that you can pop in to see Pascalene for some conversational French and the best gift-wrapping this side of the Beer Kill. Sharing warm conversation with folks at the pharmacy, the lovely ladies at the church thrift store and the town hall and the hardware store, the reliable older gentlemen on bar stools and behind counters and with hair clippers in hand, spinning yarns of yester-year. The firm handshakes in old bank buildings, the eateries that make your mouth water, even passing the bus yard and chuckling at the 'No Buses Allowed' sign. Did you know that Willie Stedner got his first printing press 45 years ago this week? Tom, at Taylor Rental, takes incredible nature photographs — even capturing a red coyote, and Peters Market has a newish Kombucha tea machine...

This is our local character, and it's our job as a community newspaper to reflect it.

I hope that you will support us — subscribe, advertise, send us feedback... be vocal.

Thank you, and I'll see you out there!
