Heard Around Our Towns...
There is news, and then there's lots of talk...

In Ellenville –
Is there subterfuge afoot? The night of August 1 seems someone vandalized the Doughboyz Pizza propane tank — letting all the gas out and prompting the new business to close on Wednesday.

In Rosendale –
As a pedestrian bridge gets replaced in New Paltz, it seems the trestle here will be given new beams.

In Orange County –
It's been revealed that County Executive Steve Neuhaus has received thousands of dollars from companies that contract with the county just as he picks up on his campaign for reelection. But... it turns out to all be legal. But is it ethical and right? Well, it's politics!

In Ulster County –
It looks like there'll be more primaries than usual this legislative election cycle. Dems have more candidates altogether as everyone fights over what's now a 12-11 GOP majority. Locally, Rich Parete will again seek the Dems' nod against a caucus-winning challenger in Marbletown, as will his father in nearby Olive. In Wawarsing, the Rev. Julius Collins has come forth to primary former councilman John Gavaris. Other tickets are still up for grabs and no, local gadfly Mike Wendel is no longer seeking a run but waiting to try his hand at Congress. Meanwhile, it seems young Ashley Dittus of Hurley may be the Democrats' new elections commissioner.

In The Catskills –
On top of growing state funds and regional interest comes a new commitment for $750 million from the New York City Dept. of Environmental Protection for the upgrading of infrastructure at the Ashokan Reservoir, including the dam, dikes, and recreation facilities ... expected to begin sometime around the year 2023.

In The Region –
The Institute for Family Health is opening a new call center in New Paltz with $1.8 million in state funding. Yet another example of funding to one place that frees up moneys elsewhere, including Ellenville's own IFH.
