KERHONKSON – My deepest condolences go out to the Hinchey family as they mourn the loss of Maurice. With Congressman Hinchey’s passing, our community has lost a selfless and inspiring leader who for decades has been our champion.
I was privileged to grow up in Ulster County with Maurice Hinchey first as my State Assemblyman and then as my Representative in Congress. From an early age, I looked up to him as the model of a true public servant — one who showed up, put our community ahead of politics, and was never afraid to speak truth to power.
A former sailor, cement plant worker, and toll collector, Congressman Hinchey never forgot where he came from. And his courageous and steady voice made our community better. From his unwavering work to protect our environment, to his outspoken opposition to the Iraq War even when that position wasn’t popular, Congressman Hinchey never wavered from his convictions. He had the courage to stand up to U.S. presidents, the selflessness to spend hours talking to one constituent about his or her concerns, and the eloquence to capture why we love our community so much.
Maurice Hinchey was the very best among us and he will be missed.
