MIDDLETOWN – A most informative program was presented at the Circleville Church by the Town of Wallkill Historical Association on Jan. 13. Guest speaker Andy Mills spoke at length on the actions of several local people in both the American Revolution and the American Civil War. In addition to sharing his knowledge, Mills had on display several artifacts and documents with connections to these events, including one signed by Lt. Col. James McClaughey.
Col. McClaughey was in command on the 2nd Ulster Militia at the Battle of Forts Montgomery and Clinton of Oct. 6, 1777. He was wounded and captured by the British Forces in this action. The Towns of Crawford, Montgomery and Wallkill were all part of Ulster County at this time and were the homes of some of the patriots who were in this fight. Some of the rank and file never came back, and remain today forgotten. Most all who read these words walk or drive over property once owned or traveled over by these heroes.
