ELLENVILLE – At the May 30 village board meeting, Mayor Jeff Kaplan had both good news and bad news regarding Berme Road Park. The good news was that bathrooms and a larger pavilion with a visitor’s center is now planned for the upper level of the park. The bad news is the state of the basketball and tennis courts. Positioned at the bottom of a steep slope, they are subject to water draining underneath them which has produced cracks and damage.
Kaplan said an effort had to be made to see if money for repair work could be found in Albany, though the current gerrymandered Assembly District (the 101st) does not give much power or influence to Ellenville. Furthermore, Senator John Bonacic is retiring, removing his seniority and ability to find funds from the equation.
Mayor Kaplan did say that volunteer efforts by anyone who could marshal equipment and manpower would be much appreciated. In the event that nothing can be done, the basketball courts would probably have to be closed.
