Grand Hotel: Napanoch's Shanley Hotel Gets A Facelift

Looking a little like a ghost town, with big vacant buildings filling its two-block main street, Napanoch is about to find real folks - rather than ghosts moving in. But Sal and Cindy Nicosia say they aren't trying to banish the ghosts they say they've met since they began renovations.

Restoration of the Shanley Hotel is underway, and because the hulking white building constitutes about a third of the street's commercial structures, this could be the catalyst for the awakening of Napanoch's slumbering main street.

Those who have seen what the Nicosias did with the with the c. 1707 Abraham Bevier House know that the Shanley Hotel will not only be restored to its former glory, but probably will exceed it.

Cindy is responsible for the truly exquisite stenciling, furnishing and decorating in the Bevier House, but she can also be found caulking, spackling and just about any other chore that comes along. Sal manages the construction, and the quality of his work is equal to Cindy's. Both have real respect for historic architecture, and are careful to enhance not obliterate the character of the buildings they restore.

Plans for the Shanley include recreating most of the hotel's original rooms, with a few extras - like an apartment for the manager - and a suite on the second floor, from rooms Sal said were at one time used as a brothel.

Look for a gift shop in the former dining room, and the former bar will become a caf, where Cindy envisions people meeting friends for coffee and soft drinks, adding ambiance to main street.

Although both Nicosias say they love bringing back old buildings, this is not a hobby it's how they make their living. They're hoping to sell the Bevier House to someone who will operate a bed and breakfast or a place where weddings can be held. The Nicosias hope to have the Shanley completed in 18 months, so watch for your invitation to the grand opening!
