Ravens have long intrigued us with their dark aura and annoying croaks. Often seen as bringers of doom or messengers from the beyond, these clever critters have become a staple of Halloween. But there’s more to ravens than just their spooky reputation.

Sporting jet-black feathers, ravens have a sleek figure. Their thick bills, shaggy throat feathers, and piercing eyes probably contribute to their suspense-inspiring mien. Ravens have wingspans reaching up to four feet, making them excellent fliers.

But don’t let their association with death fool you. Ravens have a versatile palate. These birds are opportunistic eaters, dining on everything from insects to fruit and – just kidding, I lied about the death thing – they obviously eat carrion, too. They’re also very cunning, a fit for their reputation, as they’ve been spotted using tools to access food and even playing tricks on other animals to steal their snacks.

Though intelligent, ravens lack brute strength when compared to some predators, such as hawks and eagles. But luckily, their brains often help them stay one step ahead of danger.

Ravens thrive in diverse habitats, from dense forests to desolate tundras and urban environments. They’re as comfortable nesting on a cliffside as they are atop a skyscraper, making them one of the most adaptable birds.

When raising the next generation of Halloween haunts, ravens are attentive parents. They typically lay three to seven eggs, which both parents incubate. Once hatched, the chicks grow quickly under the watchful eyes of their parents, fledging within a few weeks, but staying close to the family for months, learning the tricks-and-treats of the raven trade.
