Some new vehicle manufacturers have already removed AM radio from their vehicles, including electric vehicles, with more set to continue this trend in the coming years. This decision by manufacturers has led to concerns from some who believe access to AM radio is essential. There is also a push in Congress to pass a law that would require vehicle manufactures to include AM radio in all new builds.

Vince Benedetto, president and CEO of Bold Gold Media, believes new vehicles should continue to have AM radio capability. As the owner of a group of radio stations, Benedetto pointed to the current California wildfires as an example of how AM radio plays an important role during emergencies.

"You're evacuating, you're in your car, you're fleeing for your life, cell networks are down, TV's useless, the internet's probably not working well, and you're in your car and you don't where to go in an emergency. What's working for you," questioned Benedetto. "The car radio."

Benedetto has been outspoken about keeping AM radio in new cars because it could be the only way to get emergency information to the public during a crisis.

"AM is the backbone infrastructure of America's Emergency Alert System. Our federal, state, and local governments have spent a lot of resources making sure that when everything goes down, which is common, there's still a way to send emergency information," he said.

AM radio can reach an estimated 90 percent of the population in the United States because of its ability to broadcast over long distances. The problem is that some automobile manufacturers are omitting AM radio in the new electric vehicles because the vehicle creates radio interference. To counter this trend, legislation pending in both houses of Congress would require automobile manufacturers to include AM radio in new cars.

"Groups from the NAACP to the Farmers Bureau to conservative broadcasters were opposed to this," Benedetto remarked. "The listeners of all of these stations have reached out to their congressmen and senators and have said, 'You can't take away my radio.'"

Benedetto says if you're concerned about this trend, you can help by contacting your federal representatives and encouraging them to support the pending legislation.

"It's not beyond the real possibility that states could also pick up this and say all cars sold in Pennsylvania or New York have this for safety reasons," he added.

State Senator Peter Oberacker, a Republican representing Sullivan and a portion of Ulster County, has expressed his support for such an effort in New York.
