Ulster County is planning to establish a “Sister Community” relationship with the Chernivtsi Region of Ukraine, with the goal of promoting cultural exchange, education, and municipal service initiatives. The Ulster County Legislature will consider the resolution on April 15.

The resolution was sponsored by County Executive Jen Metzger and Legislature Chair Peter Criswell, building on an existing Sister City relationship established last year between Kingston and Sokyryany. Ulster County is home to a large Ukrainian population and a cultural center in Kerhonkson. The county legislature has also expressed its commitment to supporting Ukraine in its ongoing fight for independence.

“It is particularly important to show our solidarity with the Ukrainian people at this time, as they fight for their independence and an end to this unjust war,” County Executive Metzger said.

The Chernivtsi Region, located in western Ukraine, is also home to several cultural landmarks including the UNESCO-listed Chernivtsi National University and the Khotyn Fortress, a 13^th century castle.

The initiative to develop a Sister Community relationship began last year after Kerhonkson resident Tim Distel, who has lived in the Chernivtsi Region, connected local leaders with the Chernivtsi Regional Council.

“It's truly an honor to help our county build a bond of friendship and cooperation with the Chernivtsi Oblast,” said Distel. “I'm very proud of our community for continuing to stand with Ukraine as they defend their independence.”

The partnership is meant to foster deeper connections, allowing the two communities to share knowledge and resources. Criswell expressed a desire to learn “from the remarkable strength and innovation” of the country. “By working together,” he said, “we can make a tangible impact in supporting Ukraine's recovery and strengthening local governments on both sides.”
