City residents will have a chance to get a glimpse of one of the Navy’s newest warships on Friday when the USS Marinette (LCS-25) travels up the Hudson River en route to a historic port call in Albany. The ship is expected to pass by Kingston around 4:45 p.m.

Named for the Wisconsin city where it was built, the Marinette is a shallow-draft Freedom Class Littoral Combat Ship designed to operate close inshore where larger warships cannot go. The vessel measures 378 feet long with a top speed of about 40 knots and carries a crew of about 40. The ship is headed to Albany where it will be the first major active-duty vessel to drop anchor there in 30 years. The visit is part of America’s 250th anniversary celebration which also includes a parade of tall ships in New York harbor.

In a press release issued Thursday, Ulster County officials asked boaters and drone operators to steer clear of the warship as it proceeds up the Hudson. Unauthorized vessels must maintain at least 100 yards distance from Navy ship and operate at minimum speed within 500 yards. Unauthorized drone flights must remain at least 3,000 feet laterally and 1,000 feet above the ship. The schedule for the USS Marinette’s passage up the Hudson is as follows – all times are approximate:

Newburgh-Beacon Bridge: 2:45 p.m.
Ulster County area: 4-5:30 p.m.
Kingston: 4:45 p.m.
Rip Van Winkle Bridge: 6 p.m.
