“Artificial intelligence” is computer systems that do not require human intellect to solve problems, to make decisions or to understand language. For decades, movies and novels have warned about the potential of computers and robots taking over the world, and that reality is now here.

There is a section of society that thinks it will be great not having to do simple tasks any longer, because robots will do them for humans. Some people imagine not having to work anymore because the typical nine-to-five job will be replaced. Thinking about a world without human teachers, doctors or nurses seems more efficient and less costly. If this sounds like a dream scenario for you, you might want to reconsider, because there are many hidden consequences that people may not think about.

AI and robots are predicted to take most current jobs from civilians by 2030. Many businesses will potentially save money and produce more goods by replacing humans with robots, but they will also lose out on creativity and ingenuity. Additionally, our country runs on consumerism for its economy. Without jobs, our current system would crash. Large portions of society not having jobs would not be beneficial to the economic, mental or physical health of society.

The workplace is where people get the majority of their social interaction each day. Without jobs, if people are alone all day, depression rates would surely go up, and people would just become shut-ins. Also, if people are not making money, they will not be able to own homes or feed their families. Without any other resources, they will be dependent on the government to survive.

Society has already become accustomed to using AI platforms like ChatGPT and AI-generated apps for school, work and home purposes, but they should be used with caution. Even students at Livingston Manor are aware of the potential dangers that can come from an artificial intelligence takeover.

Kasey Careme, an LMCS senior, said, “I think it would be a bad thing, because people wouldn’t be able to buy things or go to work if they lose their jobs to robots.”

“AI is only good when used for certain things, and can be bad if used in the wrong way,” said junior Kenzie Cole.

Shane Graham, a sophomore, believes that “it depends on what AI is being used for. On one hand, if it’s being used to benefit another, it is a good thing. However, if it is being misused, there’s a chance that it could do something harmful.”

“Certain technologies can be harmful if used against people, but other technologies used in places like construction or medicine can help people,” said Bethanie Morigga, a freshman.

No matter what people feel about the explosion of artificial intelligence in society, it is important that everyone has a conversation about how it is used so that the world as we know it does not completely disappear.
